GEN I: Chapter 14

It's someones birthday today!

Alan picks up his cellphone to make a quick call, and arrange a small party for later in the morning. He made a few arrangements to have the birthday gathering at the city park. His only son was moving into toddler hood, it had to be celebrated. He called close family on Jenni's side and briefly wished he could call his own family, but that was impossible.
On the way to the park, Alan and his family stopped at the grocery store to purchase a birthday cake for Hayden. Even though he was not going to eat any, they had to have something for the party guests.

When they got to the park, some of the guests had already shown up and were chatting amongst themselves. Alan joined into the conversations just as Lenny was making some funny faces. Lenny continued talking to Alan for a few minutes, but then he mentioned his wife and broke down a little.

Alan tried to comfort him as best he could.
He even consoled Lenny and let him cry on his shoulder.

It was time for the cake. Alan and Jenni's first son Chase gathered to watch Hayden blow his candles out. Jenni put him down to give him more room to spread out.

So far he looks mostly like his father. Even though the color of his eyes is just like Alan's, the shape came from Jenni.
They stayed for a little bit longer, eating cake and conversing with guests. Lenny started feeling a little better and more composed. He rejoined the party smiling at his grandson, happy to be there.
After a little while, Hayden was getting pretty tired so they all went home.

Bushed from the party, Jenni carried her little boy up the stairs and tucked him into bed. She stood there for a moment to watch him. Her little man was growing up fast.
Jenni went back downstairs to talk to Alan.

It was quiet in the house, Alan and Jenni cuddled on the couch to watch some TV. At one point Alan leaned over to kiss Jenni, and she responded. Things were just starting to heat up a little bit when the doorbell rang. Alan sighed and got up to answer. At the same time, Jenni happened to hear Hayden waking up from his nap. "He's probably hungry, he hasn't eaten anything since he woke up this morning" she told Alan, "you get the door, I'll get him."
Alan nodded and went out to greet the guest.

The gentleman that cam was actually looking for Jenni, apparently he was an old boyfriend. "Jenni is busy at the moment, taking care of our son" Alan said, kind of defensively.
"Oh, alright then, I'll come back some other time" the man said, and walked off.
Alan watched him go for a minute, then shrugged and thought 'I guess he didn't want to wait, oh well'. He came in to see Jenni attempting to start the potty training process, and had to chuckle. Hayden was just to hungry and fought her every step of the way. He was not in the mood.
Jenni sat Hayden in the highchair, and they all had dinner together. After dinner Hayden stayed up to play for a little bit before they all went to bed.

Alan went off to work the next morning, leaving Jenni and Hayden home alone. Jenni spent most of morning in her garden.
Hayden loved to be alone, so he played in his room with his new toys for hours. Jenni only came and got him when it was time to eat. They did play together, but Hayden seemed to prefer to be by himself.

That afternoon, Alan rushed home to be with his family. He had some news for his wife.
When he walked in the door, he paused and smiled at the little scene that greeted him. Jenni was playing in the floor with Hayden and they just looked so picture perfect. Alan hated to break them up, but he wanted to share his news! He had been promoted today, he has almost reached the top of the ladder, only one step away actually. The only problem was, now Alan would only be working two days a week, and that might hurt when it came time to pay bills.

As it was now, and would be for a while, it was time for Jenni to leave for work. After Alan got home, they maybe had an hour together before Jenni's carpool came to get her.

Alan went upstairs to change his clothes while Hayden played. When he came back down, he figured he would help with potty training and picked Hayden up and took him to the potty. As soon as Hayden started to go, Alan regretted taking him. The stench was horrible, and Alan gagged. "I'll probably never do this again!" Alan said aloud. Hayden giggled, finished, and got off the potty leaving the mess for his daddy to clean up.

That night when Jenni got home, Alan had to go right back out to a meeting at his work. It was the late night manager that called the meeting. He was only there about 2 hours then came back home. Jenni was already asleep, having put Hayden down as well. Alan tried to sneak into bed so he wouldn't wake his slumbering wife.
