"Charlie! Charlie," Daphne lightly kicks Charlie awake. "Get up! My water broke, it's time for the baby to come!"
"Huh, what? You spilled water in the bed?" Charlie muttered. "No wonder I was dreaming about swimming." He started to doze off when he registered the last half of his wife's statement. Soon he was jumping out of the bed with her.
"Are you sure? Oh no! What do we do?" Charlie became frantic, and worried. "We're not prepared! I don't have your bag packed or anything! What's the baby gonna wear? What do we do?"
"Uh, get to the hospital." Daphne said. "Honey I have the bag ready let's just go."
"Right." Charlie started to calm now, the initial shock was over. "Well let me just get a couple more things."
"Charlie, no, we're ready, let's go." Daphne started walking out.
When she reached the top of the stairs, another contraction came and Daphne had to stop moving for a minute. Charlie was in such a hurry to gather those last few things he needed he repeatedly stumbled and nearly fell.
The contraction passed, and Daphne raced to get to the truck before another one. Charlie still wasn't directly behind her, so she jumped in the driver seat. She wouldn't wait for him much longer, another pain was shooting through her abdomen. As soon as that one passed she was going to leave, with or without him. Luckily for Charlie he jumped in the passenger side right before she pulled out.
"Are you sure you should drive??" Charlie asked.
"Yes, trust me - I'll get us there quicker." Daphne hit the gas and they were on their way. The hospital was only a few blocks anyway, she was sure she could make it without stopping.
...
Cedric got off work and walked outside of his building. Then he noticed the car parked - unavoidably - on the street.
"Shit!" He whispered.
Cedric turned to take refuge back in his building since he knew of a couple different hiding places. As soon as he turned, he was face to face with the cop.
"Your under arrest buddy, turn around and put your hands behind your back!" The policeman said loudly.
Cedric bowed his head and did as the man asked. He was then escorted to the car and driven to the police station. Cedric was to be held there all night, but since they had no real evidence of any crime Cedric had committed, they could not hold him longer than 12 hours.
...
Charlie and Daphne arrived at the hospital safe and sound. As soon as Daphne got out of the truck she paused for another contraction to come and go. Then they went inside the building and informed the nurse the contractions were only two minutes apart. The baby would be here soon.
...
Hayden was awakened by the truck engine. He got out of bed and was just about to check on Charlie and Daphne when something else happened. Hayden was moving on. Isabel jumped out of the bed, and as soon as she was up they were both joined by the Angel of Death.
Death gestured toward Hayden, and pointed toward an urn that had been conjured. Hayden understood that it was time to go and - mostly - he had been ready, but the baby would be born soon and he wanted nothing more than to see his grandchild. He opened his arms in a plea.
"Can I just have one more day? Just one."
The Angel of Death gestured a 'no' and pointed at the urn again.
Hayden understood and shrugged, "I had to try." He then looked at Isabel, "I love you." That was all he said before he disappeared.
...
Once Daphne had the strength to stand, the couple and the new baby were sent home. As they stood by the curb, awaiting the taxi, Charlie couldn't help but stare at his boy. He was a father, now it was real to him. The time during the pregnancy all seemed like a dream, but now it was real. His son was more beautiful than anything to Charlie, and Charlie would do anything for him.
Daphne was very pleased, though she seemed to be suffering a mild case of postpartum depression. She thought maybe it was because she had wanted a girl, but so did Charlie and he seemed fine. The birth of a son shocked her, she wanted a girl because she was a girl. Daphne figured a girl would be easier to handle for a first baby, since she knew how a girls mind worked. Daphne glanced at Brian in her arms. She couldn't hold back the smile. He was so cute.
Isabel held her breath as she watched Hayden's urn. She decided she couldn't handle this. She threw on her jacket and pants and picked up the urn. With tears in her eyes, making it hard to see, she ran to the family cemetery.
Isabel placed Hayden where she thought he would like it best, and where she would want to be when she departed. She cried hard for a few minutes before leaving. When she did, she ran and she ran just as hard as she cried. She wasn't sure how to handle life without Hayden.
When she got home she changed back into her pajamas. Her plan was to curl up in the bed and wait for Death to find her too. Isabel was just about to walk up the stairs when the door opened behind her. She turned to see who it was.
When they got inside, Charlie looked at Daphne. "Are you alright, everything okay?" He asked.
"I'm fine Charlie, but your mother doesn't look too great." Daphne had noticed the expression on Isabel, despite the appearance of her grand baby.
Charlie turned to see his mother. "Mom! What's wrong?"
Isabel grabbed Charlie by the arms, and looked him in the eyes. "It's your father. He's... he's dead." She managed to get out the most important words, even if it was a little forward.
Charlie's face fell. He was in shock. He couldn't say anything.
Just then Isabel's phone rang. Slowly she answered. "Hello?"
"Hi, Mrs. Fuller?" The voice on the other end asked.
"Yes, what do you want?" It wasn't a question, more like a demand from Isabel. She wasn't in the mood for a prank call.
"This is the police station, I am calling to inform you that we have your son - Cedric Fuller - in custody. He will remain here until morning."
Isabel's face lost a little more color, and she couldn't say another word. She just hung up the phone.
Isabel looked at Charlie and sobbed out the words, "Cedric's in jail." Charlie held her as she cried.
Daphne wanted to help, but she was unsure of what to do or say. She placed her free hand on Isabel's shoulder and hoped that it made her feel a little better.
Oh, no, Hayden! I shed a few tears--I will really miss him, Poor Isabel, what a night with Cedric in jail :( You must have had to be on your toes with all of that!
ReplyDeleteNo kidding, drama drama drama. Too bad Hayden couldn't meet Brian. He was so looking forward to a grand baby!
ReplyDeleteWonder what the Fuller's plan with Cedric. Naughty Cedric.
I will miss Hayden too. It was a very frantic picture night I will say that. Very weird way to welcome a new baby! This game will throw you for a loop sometime ya know.
